Macron Calls on Iran to Reduce Regional Tensions, Secure Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Iran to reduce regional tensions and ensure safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz following a recent phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to reports.

Macron said the discussion focused on broader diplomatic efforts currently underway in Pakistan, where negotiations involving the United States and Iran are taking place. He encouraged Tehran to take advantage of the ongoing dialogue to support a lasting reduction in tensions and move toward a clear and binding agreement involving all relevant regional actors.

In comments shared on social media, Macron emphasized the need for any potential agreement to include strong security guarantees for the wider region and stressed the importance of maintaining a stable maritime environment in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

He also highlighted the importance of respecting existing ceasefire arrangements, including those related to Lebanon, and reaffirmed France’s support for Lebanese state institutions as the legitimate authority responsible for national sovereignty and decision-making.

Macron added that France is prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The remarks come as high-level negotiations in Pakistan continue to draw international attention, with diplomatic efforts framed as part of a broader attempt to stabilize a conflict that escalated earlier this year following a US–Israeli military offensive on Iran, according to reports.

The conflict has reportedly resulted in thousands of casualties, including both Iranian civilians and US military personnel, amid ongoing regional tensions.
